First Swine flu case (suspected) in India:

Hyderabad, April 30: An NRI, who arrived in Hyderabad two days back from the US, has been quarantined after he was detected with swine flu symptoms.

According to newspaper reports, the NRI from Texas has been kept in isolation and is being taken well care of by medical experts. However, his identity has not yet been revealed.

In view of the swine flu pandemic, which has so far claimed 159 lives in Mexico, governments all over the world have taken several preventive measures aimed at preventing the spread of the deadly disease.
Accordingly, a special team of doctors is carrying thorough medical check up of those passengers, who have come to India in the past ten days from the US and other affected countries.

It was during one such check up that the NRI from Texas was found to be carrying the symptoms of swine flu.

The medical team is examining the passengers to ensure that they don’t have swine flu symptoms like running nose, fever, body aches etc.
However, the authorities have not yet confirmed that the NRI is affected with the deadly swine flu virus. If it is confirmed then it would be first such case in India.

It is to be noted the US State of Texas has reported its first death due to swine flu virus on Wednesday.

Aware some more detail !

What are the symptoms of swine flu?

The symptoms of swine flu in people are similar to the symptoms of a regular flu:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Body aches
  • Headache
  • Chills
  • Fatigue

Some people have reported diarrhea and vomiting associated with swine flu.

Like seasonal flu, swine flu may cause a worsening of underlying chronic medical conditions.

How does swine flu spread?

Spread of this swine influenza A (H1N1) virus is thought to be happening in the same way that seasonal flu spreads.

Flu viruses are spread mainly from person to person through coughing or sneezing of people with influenza.

Sometimes people may become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.

How can someone with the flu infect someone else?

Infected people may be able to infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 7 or more days after becoming sick.

That means that you may be able to pass on the flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick.

What should I do to keep from getting the flu?

First and most important:

  • Wash your hands frequently
  • Try to stay in good general health
  • Get plenty of sleep
  • Be physically active
  • Manage your stress
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Eat nutritious food
  • Try not touch surfaces that may be contaminated with the flu virus
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

What else can I do to protect myself from getting sick?

There is no vaccine available right now to protect against swine flu.

But there are everyday actions that can help prevent the spread of germs that cause respiratory illnesses like influenza.

Take these everyday steps to protect your health:

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
  • Throw away nasal tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze.
  • Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. (Germs spread this way.)
  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people.

If you get sick with influenza, CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.

Awake & Aware about Swine Flu?

Hello India,

Awake and Aware... There is a flu spreading around the world similar to "bird flu" but could be worse than that.

What is Swine flu?

Swine influenza (also swine flu) refers to influenza caused by any strain of the influenza virus endemic in pigs (swine). Strains endemic in swine are called swine influenza virus (SIV).

Why it is called swine flu?

Swin meaning from wordweb - "Stout-bodied short-legged omnivorous animals" (Pig)

This virus is named swine flu because one of its surface proteins is similar to viruses that usually infect pigs, but this strain is spreading in people and it is unknown if it infects pigs.

How it is transmitting to humans?

In coughs or sneezes, but an increasing body of evidence shows little particles of virus can linger on tabletops, telephones and other surfaces and be transferred via the fingers to the mouth, nose or eyes.

washing of hands with soap and water or with alcohol-based hand sanitizers, especially after being out in public.

Symptoms

Sudden fever, cough or muscle aches

Treatment

The CDC recommends the use of Tamiflu (oseltamivir) or Relenza (zanamivir) for the treatment and/or prevention of infection with swine influenza viruses. The virus isolates that have been tested from the US and Mexico are however resistant to amantadine and rimantadine.] If a person gets sick, antiviral drugs can make the illness milder and make the patient feel better faster. They may also prevent serious flu complications. For treatment, antiviral drugs work best if started soon after getting sick (within 2 days of symptoms).
